Hillcrest Painting and Flooring Services paints houses, townhouses and units in Malvern East VIC 3145. Steve quotes every job himself and is on the tools, with over 30 years in the trade, including more than 15 years painting homes across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Malvern East is a much bigger suburb than its neighbour, with about 22,300 residents at the last Census, more than twice Malvern's. About half its homes are separate houses, around a quarter are townhouses or semis, and about a fifth are flats.
Much of its housing comes from two periods: interwar brick homes built as Malvern spread east, and early postwar family homes on the Chadstone side. Many are now due for a repaint after decades of sun and rain.
Inside and out, one free written quote sets out exactly what is being done.
Brick villas and bungalows, inside and out.
Family homes from the 1950s, refreshed and repainted.
Interiors and exteriors for owners and landlords.
Walls, ceilings, doors and trim in every room.
Washing, filling, sanding and priming before any topcoat.

Malvern East filled out as the City of Malvern's population grew in the early twentieth century. Stonnington Council's heritage history notes that as the population climbed, housing spread east into Malvern East, and that the houses there were more uniform and less ornate than in Malvern. Malvern East station opened in 1929.
The Coolgardie area (HO350) is a substantially intact interwar estate of quality brick family homes, mostly villas and bungalows, and was one of the last parts of East Malvern developed before the Depression. Older pockets survive too: the Malvern Park Estate is a rare group of Victorian cottages from the 1880s land boom, alongside Edwardian streetscapes.
On a face brick bungalow, the painting is usually the timber: eaves, fascias, window frames, verandah posts and the front door. Original face brick is usually best left unpainted. If your home is in a heritage overlay, our Malvern painters page explains how Stonnington's rules work, and our guide to period home painting covers interwar colour schemes.
The western part of Chadstone, now in the Malvern East postcode, was an early postwar suburb, and its primary school opened in 1953 as the area filled with new houses. Many of these homes are now due for repainting, and eaves, window frames and timber trim are usually the first to need attention.
For more on 1950s brick homes, see our Balwyn North painters page. Townhouses and units are a big part of Malvern East too, and we paint them inside and out for owners and landlords. See also our exterior painting service.
There's no flat rate, because every job is different. These are the things that move the price:
Size and storeys: larger homes and two-storey townhouses take longer.
Condition: flaking paint and weathered timber need more preparation.
Interior or exterior: exteriors depend on weather, height and access.
Colour changes: big colour changes can need an extra coat.
We don't price a job until we've seen it. You'll get a free written quote that sets out what's included.

“Steve did an excellent job and we are totally satisfied with his work. We arranged for Steve to do a complete re-paint of our Edwardian house, both an interior and exterior re-paint. We were particularly pleased that he turned up when he said he would. A particularly nice touch was that as the whole project turned out to be less work than anticipated at the outset, Steve adjusted the final cost downwards.”
“Steve and his team at Hillcrest have been a pleasure to have in our home. A couple of months ago we embarked on a restoration of our home which included all external and internal painting. Having the right team work with us and fit in with our family was important. Steve and Michael have been very professional, great communication with us, responsive and flexible to our needs and to any changes We would highly recommend Hillcrest to anyone looking for great tradespeople (painting and flooring) who know how to do technically proficient work and are just good people to have in your home.”

We paint homes across Malvern East and its neighbours, including Malvern, Glen Iris and Ashburton. For the full range of work, see our residential painting in Melbourne.
