Hillcrest Painting and Flooring Services paints houses, townhouses and apartments in Kew VIC 3101, including Kew East. Steve quotes every job himself and is on the tools, not a subcontracted crew, with over 30 years painting homes across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Painters in Kew work on a wider mix of homes than most suburbs. At the last Census, about half of Kew's homes were separate houses, nearly a quarter were townhouses, terraces or semis, and a quarter were flats and apartments. That share of apartments is more than double the Victorian average.
So a Kew painting job is just as likely to be a two-bedroom apartment as a big family home. The work is different, and so are the rules about who decides what gets painted.
Whatever kind of home you have in Kew, one written quote sets out exactly what's being painted.
Walls, ceilings, doors and trim, planned around the building's access and parking.
Inside and out, including jobs that need owners corporation approval.
Weatherboard, render and brick, with eaves, fascias and windows.
Extra preparation for old paint layers, worn trim and timber windows.
Filling, sanding and priming, so the finish lasts.

If you own an apartment or unit, the first question isn't colour. It's who gets a say.
Inside your own apartment, it's generally your call. Consumer Affairs Victoria says lot owners are entitled to renovate or refurbish the interior of their apartment or unit, and only need to notify the owners corporation if the work needs a building or planning permit.
Outside is different. Common property, like shared walls, stairwells and the building's exterior, is looked after by the owners corporation, and a lot owner can't repair or alter it unless the owners corporation has authorised them. Before anything on the outside gets painted, check with your owners corporation, and we'll work to whatever they approve.
On walls we use Haymes Expressions, and on doors and trim Haymes Ultratrim. There's more on how we handle interior painting in Melbourne on its own page.
Older houses carry older paint, and in homes built before 1970 some of it may contain lead. The Australian Government's lead paint guide says homes built before 1970 are the most at risk.
It wasn't just topcoats. The guide says a "pink primer" made from red and white lead was used as an undercoat on interior and exterior timber, and as a priming coat on plaster walls. It also notes that young children can absorb up to 60 per cent of the lead they swallow, which is why preparation in an older family home needs care. If your home is older, we'll talk about it when we quote.
Outside, we use the Haymes Solarshield system. Most homes need an exterior repaint every 7 to 10 years. See how we approach exterior painting.
There's no flat rate, because a Kew apartment and a Kew family home are very different jobs. These are the things that move the price:
Type of home: an apartment interior, a townhouse and a detached house each need a different amount of time and access.
Inside, outside or both: painting the whole home in one job is quoted as one job.
Approvals: outside work on a unit or apartment may need owners corporation sign-off before it can be booked.
Surface condition: flaking paint, damaged timber and old paint layers all add preparation.
Size and storeys: more rooms, more wall area and a second storey add time.
We don't price a job until we've seen it. You'll get a free written quote that sets out what's included.
1. Call or request a quote: tell us what you'd like painted.
2. Steve visits: he looks at the surfaces and talks through colours. Colour consultation is included.
3. Written quote: you get a free written quote that lists exactly what's included.
4. The painting: Steve is on the tools, and the space is cleaned up at the end of each day.
“Steve did an excellent job and we are totally satisfied with his work. We arranged for Steve to do a complete re-paint of our Edwardian house, both an interior and exterior re-paint. We were particularly pleased that he turned up when he said he would. A particularly nice touch was that as the whole project turned out to be less work than anticipated at the outset, Steve adjusted the final cost downwards.”
“Steve and his team at Hillcrest have been a pleasure to have in our home. A couple of months ago we embarked on a restoration of our home which included all external and internal painting. Having the right team work with us and fit in with our family was important. Steve and Michael have been very professional, great communication with us, responsive and flexible to our needs and to any changes We would highly recommend Hillcrest to anyone looking for great tradespeople (painting and flooring) who know how to do technically proficient work and are just good people to have in your home.”

We also paint homes near Kew, including Kew East, and in the suburbs next door: painters in Hawthorn, Balwyn painters, painters in Balwyn North and house painters in Camberwell. For bigger projects inside and out, see our house painting across the eastern suburbs. For Kew's older houses, see heritage house painting.
Generally, yes. Consumer Affairs Victoria says lot owners are entitled to renovate or refurbish the interior of their apartment or unit. You only need to notify the owners corporation if the work needs a building or planning permit.
You have to keep the exterior of your lot in good and serviceable repair. Consumer Affairs Victoria says that if you don't, the owners corporation can order repairs in writing, and if they aren't done within 28 days it can do the work itself and charge you for it.
Yes. We paint houses, townhouses, units and apartments, inside and out, and we can work with your owners corporation where approval is needed.
