Decks and Outdoor Timber
Outdoor timber takes the most weather of anything around a house. Sun dries it out and rain gets into any gaps, so a deck finish wears faster than the paint on the walls.
Preparation is most of the job. The deck is cleaned, loose or failing coatings are removed, and any rough or damaged boards are dealt with before recoating. Without it, a new finish can peel early.
There are two broad choices. Penetrating oils and stains soak into the timber and show the grain, while solid coatings sit on the surface.
